Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy Temple

The sacred Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy Temple, now a powerful and revered pilgrimage site in Aremallenahalli Betta, carries with it a divine and deeply symbolic history that is cherished by the people of the region.

It is believed that around 200 years ago, Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy originally resided in a village called Balughatta. At that time, the Lord was worshipped by Brahmin families through strict Vedic rituals and offerings, in accordance with tradition.

However, a unique and extraordinary event unfolded that brought the deity to His present home in Aremallenahalli.

According to local legend, a humble and devout shepherd, who owned about 200 sheep, used to roam from village to village, feeding and tending to his flock. This man, though simple in appearance, had deep bhakti (devotion) in his heart. One day, while passing through Balughatta, he encountered Sri Ranganatha Swamy, who manifested before him in a divine form.

To the shepherd’s amazement, the Lord made an unusual request — He asked for non-vegetarian food. The shepherd, without hesitation, responded with humility and devotion, saying:

"Swamy, come with me to my place. There, we consume and prepare such food. I will serve You wholeheartedly."

Moved by the shepherd’s honesty, simplicity, and devotion, Ranganatha Swamy agreed to go with him. Miraculously, the Lord is said to have seated Himself in the shepherd’s jolige (a traditional cloth bag or shoulder sack used by travelers), a sign of great divine grace. Carried by the shepherd with utmost reverence, the Lord journeyed to Aremallenahalli.

Upon reaching Aremallenahalli Betta (hill), Sri Ranganatha Swamy chose this serene and sacred hill as His new abode. Since then, the Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy Temple has stood as a spiritual beacon on this hill, drawing devotees from all surrounding regions.

This divine story beautifully reflects how the Lord transcends caste, food preferences, and rituals, responding only to true devotion and love. It also shows how God chooses the most unexpected of devotees — a simple shepherd — to carry out His divine will.

Even today, devotees visit Aremallenahalli Betta with faith that Sri Lakshmi Ranganatha Swamy blesses all equally, regardless of their background, and that His presence continues to protect the village and its people.
